What causes heart attack and stroke?

Blood clots in arteries are the leading cause of heart attack and stroke. Although high blood pressure, cholesterol and other risk factors damage your blood vessels, it is the clot that can kill you. Heart attack and stroke are caused by blood clots suddenly forming in damaged, hardened arteries. The process of blood clot formation is called atherothrombosis and kills one Australian every 10 minutes.1
